COVENTRY UNIVERSITY

COVENTRY UNIVERSITY was the modern university in the United Kingdom in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and is placed in the top 4% worldwide for international activities. COVENTRY UNIVERSITY has been awarded the 2014 Midlands Innovative University of the year, Entrepreneurial University of the Year (2011 Times Higher Education Awards), it placed as 1st in United Kingdom for SME engagement (working with 9,000 SME’s per year), Witty review October 2013. As such the University operates numerous large scale business support programmes for the sectors it supports (manufacturing, automotive, health technology, gaming and other digital etc.). In addition, the University’s Technology Park has over 70 companies tenanted on its site and engages with many hundreds of companies each year via collaborative research, knowledge transfer programmes, internships, student placements and CPD. Historically Coventry was one of the major centres of the textile industry in United Kingdom and it is therefore fitting that the University should lead this proposal which involves developing state of the art smart textiles. The Functional Materials Group sits within the Centre for Manufacturing and Materials Engineering which is part of the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME). AME is a collaboration between COVENTRY UNIVERSITY and Unipart Manufacturing Group bringing together the best in academia, industry and research and development in a live manufacturing environment, with the aim of:

  • Developing industry-ready, world class engineering graduates
  • Disseminating research and new technologies for the benefit of Unipart, its suppliers and wider industry
  • Driving economic growth by making UK engineering and manufacturing globally competitive

AME has built a bespoke ‘Faculty on the Factory Floor’ at Unipart’s manufacturing site in the heart of Coventry. This forms the focal point of activity and will house state-of-the-art robotic automation, forming, joining, analysis and simulation, metrology and product verification technology.
